There’s something extra special about a wedding that doesn’t follow the rules. Over the past couple of years, I’ve noticed a quiet but very exciting rise in surprise weddings and honestly? I’m into it.
Hayley and Josh’s day at Kholo Gardens in Ipswich was my first ever surprise wedding to photograph, and it set the bar incredibly high.
From Engagement Party to ‘We’re Actually Getting Married!’
What guests thought was an engagement party turned into something much bigger. At what felt like just the right moment, Hayley and Josh announced that they had actually been married that very morning.
The reactions were priceless. There was a pretty even split between those who had their suspicions and those who were completely and utterly shocked. Gasps, tears, laughter and that buzzing kind of energy that you just can’t fake. It’s moments like these that make surprise wedding photography so special.
High School Sweethearts (I’m a Sucker for This)
Their story got me right in the heart. Hayley and Josh are high school sweethearts, much like myself and my husband. While we met in grades 11 and 12, these two go even further back, meeting in grade 8 after being seated next to each other because of their surnames, Daniel and Daniels.

If you know me, you know I will always have a soft spot for love stories that grow up together. There’s something incredibly grounding and genuine about them, and it showed throughout the entire day.
Kholo Gardens, Ipswich: The Perfect Backdrop
The wedding slash engagement party was held at Kholo Gardens in Ipswich, and it could not have been a more beautiful setting. Lush greenery, peaceful surrounds and that calm, romantic atmosphere that makes you slow down and take it all in.
The ceremony itself was intimate, touching and perfectly ‘them’. No fuss. No pressure. Just love, commitment and all of their favourite people in one place.
Sneaky Portraits & Newlywed Energy
My favourite part of the day was pulling Hayley and Josh away for a few sneaky couples portraits. We wandered up to the chapel at Kholo Gardens, surrounded by green and quiet, letting the adrenaline of the day settle just enough to capture what it felt like to finally let the secret out.
The joy in these images is unmatched. That rush of being newly married, the thrill of the surprise, and the deep comfort of knowing you’re exactly where you’re meant to be.
Why I Love Surprise Weddings
This day reminded me why I do what I do. Specialised event photography isn’t just about timelines and formalities. It’s about reading the room, anticipating emotion and capturing moments as they naturally unfold.
Surprise weddings bring a kind of energy that’s hard to replicate. Everyone is relaxed, present and genuinely joyful. There’s no expectation of how the day ‘should’ look, which makes the images even more meaningful.
Being trusted to capture my first surprise wedding was such an honour, and I already know I want more of them.
